In Living Colors
Exhibit at Prospects Park Zoo about the role of colors in animals life
Wildlife Conservation Society
New York City - 2003

I was the Exhibit Developer for this exhibition at Prospect Park Zoo, which describes how animals use colors in nature. It is divided in three thematic areas: matting, warning and camouflage.

Prospect Park Zoo specializes in small children, so the most of the interpretive materials were hands-on devices and colorful panels that explained in simple ways, the function of colors.

The animal collection was conformed by fish, lizards, turtles, insects and birds kept in indoor areas with naturalistic decoration.

At this mirror, children explore the forest and find themselves transformed in animals, some hiding and some warning about their toxic skins.

At this aquarium the concept of matting is explained. Children must compare
the colors of the different species of fish to find mates.

Lorekeets have similar shape, but different colors. They recognize their mates by differencing those colors.

A memory game helps focus children's attention in these diferences.

The animals were exhibited in naturalistic environments inside the terrariums. Outside, thematic decoration conected them with the topics discussed.

Human metaphors were used to explain some of the concepts we thought were too complex for small children.

In this case, the heart explains the matting attraction. Even when sex wasn't considered inappropriate, many of our visitors didn't even know that existed.
